TARLAC, Philippines — Hundreds of townmates of the late senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr  gathered on Thursday morning, August 21, to commemorate his 31st death anniversary.

The event, organized by the local government of Concepcion, also featured the inauguration of the newly renovated Benigno S. Aquino Memorial Plaza and the blessing of newly-acquired rescue equipment.

Bobby Aquino, nephew of the late senator and son of former senator Agapito “Butz” Aquino, keynoted the event. Bobby said he remembers visiting his uncle in Fort Bonifacio always surrounded with soldiers, but always with a cheerful attitude.  He said that there are two values he remembers from his Uncle Ninoy: love for God and love for country.

Tricycle driver Jesus Salas, 66, said he lived just a couple of blocks from where Ninoy lived. He recounted that Ninoy was truly a leader by practice and also a great public speaker during campaigns.

About 75 government and non-governmental organizations from Concepcion town offered flowers in front of the late senator’s statue. A poster bearing his image was tied to yellow balloons and released, to cap off the event.
