"Do you agree that awards matter to you as an artist?" I don't. As an artist, awards don't matter to me that much since my scope goes beyond that goal. Although it is kind of nice to have, I strive to serve as a visual medium for unheard voices, expressing not only my own perspectives but also those of others.

As a cartoonist, I think that awards are not really important in my case since what I desire is improvement in my skills and I can get that from the experiences and encounters I'll get along the way.

Hello, everyone! I'm Ervin Jay Aures from An Sariyong (Burauen Community College). Indeed, awards and affirmation are just a bonus to motivate artists. However, I personally believe that such means fuels artists to create more art.

" Do you think awards matter to you as an artist?" To say that awards do not matter to an artist undermines the efforts that they put up for competitions. To an extent, it does matter, and we feel upset if we aren't fortunate enough to win a place. However, our passion is much stronger than a recognition, and we continue to serve the community simply because it is where our heart belongs. Hello! I am Atchessa Yangzon from The Industrial Wheel. I believe that, whether our art or creations gain merits or not, it is still in our heart as artists to still create the art we want to make and see.

Hello po! I'm Sherry Ongbit from Sulhog Binhi Publication of SSCT "Do you agree that awards matter to you as an artist?" Personally, I don't think it should. I feel that people are pressured to get an award in order to feel that their work is good enough. It worries me that artists might limit themselves and their message because of it. As artists, it's more valuable that we express ourselves just for the sake of expression.

Awards can fuel a journalist's passion; however, it shouldn't be the main reason we choose to write and draw. We should not let them blind us in our journey of telling the truth.   

Congrats po sa mga sumali na cartoonists ng Regional Tertiary Schools Press Conference - Eastern Visayas for winning our cartoon challenge. We asked the cartoonists during my lecture in editorial cartooning to draw if winning awards matter them as artists.

Ako ay isang cartoonist na member ng Pitik Bulag, illustrator at painter.

Ako si Lisa, nagtuturo ng art history sa UP College of Fine Arts since 2012 at curator ng UP Fine Arts Gallery, o Parola (lighthouse, too, yay!). Sec-Gen po ng CAP, isang organisasyon ng mga progresibong artists at cultural workers na binuo noong 1983. 

Cartoonist ako ng Sinag, ng UP student Council newspaper, eventually Philippines Daily Express and Philippine Star until 1992.

The Samahang Kartunista ng Pilipinas used to have it when NA Larry Alcala was still its head. May gravitas yong award if given out by someone like Mang Larry

sa akin same opinion, if "prestigious & respected" yung award giving body din.

Agree. It’s crucial that the award-giving body and process is credible and is respected by the community it engages. 

although important siya, di din naman " lahat" yung awards

Naalala ko na may regular na pa-painting contests sa mga studyante noon time ko. Ewan ko lang meron pa ngayon. Kagaya ng PLDT, Metrobank, Shell at Philip Morris. Sa umpisa pampa-kapal ng CV pag wala pa laman kung baguhan ka artist. Pero in the long run, yung mga patuloy nag pursige sa kanilang sining, anumang field and nakikita ko may antas ng success sa kanilang career at respeto ng kanilang peers.

It’s also like an initiation of some sort, of being welcomed into an inner circle of like-minded folks.

Mayroon pa rin, at maraming sumasali sa palagay ko. Isa itong daluyan o means ng validation out of several modes.

Magandang balikan rin ang history ng awards at pagbibigay ng parangal sa visual arts ng ating bansa. The CCP Encyclopedia of Philippine Art has a very interesting section on this: from the earliest competitions during the Spanish and American colonial periods hanggang sa post-WWII competitions.

For our moderators po, actually may ilang artworks po na sinend dito sa chat tungkol sa topic natin ngayon. Initiative po ito nila @cartoonistzach kahapon sa talk niya sa Regional Tertiary Schools Press Con.

Mahalaga ba sa mga collector at gallery owners kung award winning ang artist na nasa stable nila?

Siguro not really "level", pero mas maraming nabubukas na opportunities para umunlad pa? May pag-angat sa prestige at pagkilala, lalo na kung credible o recognized ang award. Ang iba ay may kasama na premyo or addditional value or chance to pursue practice afterwards, like a residency. But it's up to you what to do with that opportunity and fame of the moment and to grow better as an artist and a citizen :D

Hi ako si Kiko. Isang Artist na ang isa paa ay nasa "gallery system".

Sa tingin ko, nakatutulong ang mga award na nakukuha ng isang artist 'pagkat isa ito sa daan para ang "artwork nila o body of work" ay magkaroon ng mas malawak na exposure, lalo na kung ang pathway na tatahakin ay "gallery system", mas evident to mga decades ago pa, pero sa ngayon na boom ang social media, hindi na dependent lang sa mga competition ang way para magkaroon ng exposure.

May maganda ring nadudulot ang "pagkilala" sa kakayahan ng Artist(lalo na kung bata pa) 'pagkat nakaka-boost ito ng courage na magpatuloy na maging Artist sa lipunan na marami ang kasapi ng norm na i-discourage ang maging Artist(pero hindi progressive na ito ang core o maging sole motivation ng Artist sa paggawa).

This one caught my eye (habang nagbabackread). It's one of the weapons to cut through self-doubt about one's practice. Marami ring ibang weapons, though :) Naaalala ko po ang mga artists na wala o wala masyadong awards pero fulfilled sa mga komunidad na kinabibilangan nila.

In the 1980s, walang masyadong galleries or socmed— kaya ang mga artists they don’t know where to go— i would have wanted to show in a gallery space pero wala eh until now siguro

Interesting point about artists not being encouraged as much as academics or athletes. I actually never won any art related awards when I was a student. Running for honors kasi ako and hindi ko na daw kailangan ng extra validation, mag quiz-bee nalang ako. 😒 (jokes on them nagddrawing nalang ako ngayon haha)

Anyway, it's sad to think na maraming aspiring artists and hindi naeencourage ipursue ang craft nila dahil hindi daw profitable and career path na yun.

true. maraming contests ay guise lang to get free art and advertising from artists.

But then again, artists must rise above and beyond tgat lament, na walang encouragement and all— that’s when you really get creative

Kumpara sa ngayon, mas maraming modes kung papaano maipapalaganap at makikilala ang sining. There are schools, contests, competitions, social media, the gallery system, institutions, the market. All happening simultaneously and often reinforcing each other. Useful ang awards sometimes because they help give that boost of support, whether financial to moral. But its important to discern kung alin ang talagang supportive at ano naman ang exploitative.

Ayokong magbayad just to enter

Dapat tignan kung para kanino at para saan nga ba ito. Nabanggit rin itong punto sa CCP Encyclopedia: that, beyond achievement, awards are also about the "manufacture of value" (balikan ko po ang citation page).

Dito ka malalapit sa bingit ng exploitation, like the cliff in the editorial cartoon kanina :)

There was a lot of discussion about the Leonardo Da Vinci International Art Prize lately. Interesting ito for me, for several reasons. Kayo ba?

Oo. The two artists from the regions are talented and do deserve exposure and more support elsewhere, like many others. Kahit na mas marami ang channels of validation today, does this mean that opportunities for recognition are equal for all? Marami pa rin ang excluded. 

Ang daming nagsasanga-sangang concerns din talaga mula sa topic na ito. Kulang ang isang chat event. Haha! Siguro last few words po from our moderators na gusto niyong iwan to our participants here? :)

Artists turned to social media to call out why the award is problematic, or at least to make its limits and our expectations clear. 

This impresses on me (since we are in a media platform now), how media also has the responsibility and challenge to fact check claims to prestige like awards, and help the community discern kung bordering on predatory na ito, or at least describe the nature of the awards accurately.  

siguro yung validation na hahanapin sa art, ay yung mapapabuti tayo at di mapapahamak.
