Cookie Run 2nd Story: What’s new?

Dubbed Cookie Run 2nd Story, the update pushed out to iOS and Android users features completely redesigned levels, forbidding obstacles, a new cookie (and pet) and a host of other improvements. 

Here’s a rundown of all the changes:

New Levels

Just when you thought you could navigate through the Cookie Run course with your eyes closed, gamers will be thrown for a loop with completely redesigned levels and more complicated obstacles.

The artwork is a big improvement but the game gets harder with a more complicated obstacle layout. And if that’s not hard enough the obstacles move, shift in height, drop from the ceiling, pop up from out of the ground, and in some cases disappear from under you. 

The resulting chaos takes a while to get used to and requires a little more hand and eye coordination. We loved the extra challenge, and while you’ll retain the skills you’ve developed with hours and hours of gameplay it will take a while before you’ll master the new course. So that users aren’t completely thrown off you’ll find traces of the old levels embellished with a new background or with additional obstacles thrown into the mix.

Level Up  

If you’ve ever played Cookie Run competitively you’ll know that your level in the game is directly proportionate to the percentage of extra points you get. Like any game you level up with experience points (XP) and until this update players could reach up to Level 50. That cap has been increased to 60 – a feature that will benefit advanced players who’ve been stuck at 50 for a while now.

Users can also upgrade their energy bar 10 more levels (up to Level 30 from the previous max Level 20) giving them a total energy boost of 150 (on top of how much energy your cookie can manage). We however have noticed that the energy bar appears to drain faster. Playing with our usual characters with the energy bar fully upgraded doesn’t get us significantly farther in the game (using playing time as a reference). 

Wizard Cookie and Book of Wizdom

This one doesn’t come as a surprise since we’ve seen him on the Kakao Talk version of CookieRun (available in other regions) for some time now. The Wizard/Sorcerer Cookie’s skill is turning obstacles into Jellies every 10 seconds or so while Grimoire the Book of Wizdom (his pet) earns points the faster you run.

Their combined effect is slower energy (19% slower without upgrades) drain. We recommend using this character with the Magnetic Aura boost and a fully upgraded Angel Cookie’s Holy Feather treasure.

New Events

To celebrate this milestone a couple of events are ongoing. There’s the 100 Crystal Giveaway (ends June 5) – the easiest 100 crystals you’ll ever earn on Cookie Run. All you need to do is enter the coupon code COOKIERUN2NDSTORY on a form accessible via a new menu item called coupon in the game’s settings menu.

The invite event also resets back to zero. Invite anywhere from 1 to 50 new friends and you get a host of prizes including another 100 crystals if you invite 50. If you don’t have it already we recommend inviting at least 30 players to get the Gold Drop pet which is a game must-have. 

Game play has remained pretty much untouched but we’ve noticed that bonus time has been reduced slightly while energy drain has been sped up resulting in shorter games. Thankfully you also earn points faster so you don’t lose out because of this adjustment. There are also mid-sized gold coins (smaller than the ones that Gold Drop produces) that are worth 100 coins that make earning coins easier.

While you can’t really opt out of the update, Cookie Run 2nd Story is one we would have highly recommended anyway. The much welcome changes have made the game better overall and for long-time players also provide a much needed palette cleanse.
